The Insurgency

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, I come across this story on ArmyTimes.com calling the displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina an "insurgency".

"While some fight the insurgency in the city, other(s) carry on with rescue and evacuation operations."

I guess this is why they were frisking children before they boarded a rescue helicopter, as seen tonight on ABC World News tonight. FYI - this is New Orleans, not Baghdad! I can understand being cautious, but frisking children who have been waiting outside with no food or water for 4 days is ridiculous.

Reuters also has a chilling report about people being killed by police and National Guard.

"Several residents of the impromptu shantytown recounted two horrific incidents where those charged with keeping people safe had killed them instead.

In one, a young man was run down and then shot by a New Orleans police officer, in another a man seeking help was gunned down by a National Guard soldier, witnesses said."

Despite the rhetoric coming from the Department of Homeland Security, this is not a security mission. It is a rescue mission. Let's start acting like it.

It's an "Urgent Need", not an "Insurgency". Sheesh!
