House Committee Recommends Increase in Minimum Wage

Proving that activism works, the West Virginia House of Delegates Judiciary Committee recommended passage of HB 4023 on Friday, which would raise the state's minimum wage to $5.85 per hour in July 2006, to $6.55 in 2007 and $7.25 in 2008. This would be the first raise in the minimum wage in 9 years.

This is a great step towards economic justice for West Virginia's working poor, but the bill still has a long way to go before becoming law. We need to keep telling our representatives that workers deserve a living wage.

Expecting a family to survive and support their children on full-time wages of $10,712 per year, a wage that keeps them in poverty despite working full-time, is a moral failure for our country. Our workers and their families deserve better.

If you haven't sent a message to your representative yet, I engourage you to take a few minutes and send a message through the Legislative Action Center for Children & Families. If you have already sent a message, then you can compose your own and encourage both Houses to continue moving the bill. (Link to Legislative Action Center)

As some folks used to be fond of saying, our country is supposed to be ...One nation ...under God ...with liberty ...and JUSTICE ...for ALL.

We have spent alot of time arguing about two of those words. I think God would want us to be more concerned with the last 3.
