Wabi-Sabi Grilling

dinnerI tried something new on the grill Saturday night, and it turned out so well, that I thought I would share it here.

If you're like me, you like to cook out, but cooking the same steaks, burgers and hot dogs can get boring.

At the same time, I rarely plan enough in advance to prep for anything that's too fancy - even when the recipes look great on the Food Network.

However, in an episode this week of Bobby Flay's Boy Meets Grill, Bobby showed Ted Allen, the Queer Eye food guy, this quick and easy way to grill a pork tenderloin, and I thought I would give it a try.

Instead of roasting it whole, the first step is to slice the pork tenderloin into 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick round pieces. You then tenderize the meat with a hammer type meat tenderizer. (This was Jake's favorite step.)

Next you put each piece on 2 wooden skewers. According to Flay, it's important to use 2 so the meat doesn't curl up like a hot dog on the stick.

After slicing the meat and putting it on the skewers, you just grill it for a few minutes on each side until it's cooked through. The pork grilled up quickly and was very moist.

We used one of the Hormel pork roasts that have been pre-marinated with mesquite barbecue flavor. It was delicious!

You can also add some glaze or bbq sauce toward the end of cooking if you like, but the marinade gave ours a nice glaze. Combined with some corn on the cob that we grilled in the husks, the meal was great.

It was a fun and tasty way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend with the family. I hope everyone else also had a great time with their family too!

I'd love to hear how your weekend went and any favorite grilling tips that you're willing to share in the comments. Thanks!
