As you can see in these great photos from Jason Means, the first weekend of the 2008 Met-Rx World's Strongest Man Competition and the Strong Families Festival was a great success. Everyone is having a great time watching Phil Pfister and the other athletes test themselves doing amazing feats of strength.
Saturday, the athletes carried hundreds of pounds at a time racing back and forth in the Loading Race and then flung heavy kegs over a pole vault style bar in the Keg Toss.
Sunday was the Fingal Fingers event with athletes racing to flip the equivalent of telephone poles from one end to the other. Sunday afternoon concluded with the Truck Pull where athletes literally pulled a coal truck down Kanawha Boulevard.
Monday, the events move to the State Capitol for 3 events, Squat Lift, Deadlift, and Giant Log Lift. The preliminary rounds conclude Tuesday at the University of Charleston with the Overhead Lift and Atlas Stones.
The top 10 athletes will then compete in the finals beginning Friday with some of the same events and some new ones along the way. Instead of a coal truck pull, next week features a plane pull where athletes are expected to pull a C-130 Cargo Plane weighing approximately 175,000 lbs!?
Everyone is rooting for Charleston's own Phil Pfister to continue his strong start to the competition and recapture the title of World's Strongest Man. If you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by and catch some of the action.
The complete schedule for the Strong Families Festival and remaining WSM events is posted on our HelpingKidsWin.org website.
The world famous Berenstain Bears (the official "spokesbears" of Prevent Child Abuse America) are even coming to town to enjoy some of the action next week. You won't want to miss it.
