The Struggle against the Jihad

The naming and branding experts at Wordlab.com have an interesting take about the White House retooling its slogan for the fight against al Qaeda.

They point out that in crafting the new slogan, "Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism", no one at the White House seemed to have noticed that "struggle" is the meaning of the word "jihad".

Reading their post led me to translate the new slogan using the Google Translator.

I was surprised to learn that "struggle" is also problematic in German because it is translated "kampf" as in "Mein Kampf" or "My Struggle", written by Adolf Hitler.

Somehow, I don't think this new slogan is going to be very popular in Germany or Arabic speaking countries.

On the positive side, "struggle" means "lucha" in Spanish, so it may be popular with Mexican professional wrestling fans who love Lucha Libre Wrestling.
